Octahedron: Transfixed Edition is a rhythm platformer that oozes with stylistic colors and delivers a very unique, psychedelic presentation. The game opens up with a subtle cut scene, where the player is in a cabin and goes outside to investigate something. They are drawn to a strange light and object in the forest. After touching this colorful gem-like device suspended in the air, they are transported to a new neon infused world.
50 Handcrafted Levels
Each level is presented by a screen where players must successfully climb their way to the top of over 50 challenging levels. Second only to the wild visuals is the phenomenal BPM soundtrack that mixes incredibly well alongside the platforming. I found myself cranking up the volume on our home theater when playing this while docked.
Players have the ability to beam a platform below themselves to stand on. This enables you to access higher areas. The catch however, is you can only do this twice per instance. Think of it as a double jump ability with a twist. Holding the Y button and the directional pad will allow the platform to cross the screen horizontally. Each platform has a short lifespan before it completely fizzles out. You’ll have to move and think quickly to successfully reach the top of each level. With numerous obstacles, puzzles and even enemies in place, this can be an extremely tricky feat.
Puzzles, obstacles and problem solving
Timing and creative problem solving is what Octahedron is all about. It contains some truly brilliant level designs that will stump even the best gamers out there. Running all the way to one side of the screen might open up new platforms or create a new element on the screen that allows players to skyrocket up to a new area. It will take experimentation and persistence to pass each level. The relatively high difficulty setting creates a great sense of achievement with every level that is beat. The gameplay is highly addictive and the Switch provides a great platform for this title. It’s the perfect title to play in short bursts whenever time permits. This Transfixed Edition also includes new Time Trials Medals and post-game unlockables.
Conclusion
Octahedron: Transfixed Edition is an incredibly entertaining rhythm based platformer that serves up some truly unique visuals, alongside an amazing soundtrack. Each level offers up some inventive puzzles and obstacles to overcome. The fast paced gameplay, distinct art style and stellar music from developer Demimonde make this a really exciting game and absolutely different from just about anything else you have likely played.
